Transportation Sector in OIC Member Countries
Date: 10 September 2009

An efficient transportation system is a fundamental element in socio-economic development. It facilitates fast transfer and movements of goods, services and resources from producing to consuming areas and improves access to local and international markets.

The issue of transportation has been taken up in the various OIC for a beginning with the Second Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM) in 1979, which called on the member countries to strengthen and coordinate their activities in the field of transportation. One major outcome of this meeting was the realization that the necessary information whereby concrete steps could be taken to enhance cooperation in the field of transportation was largely missing.
