Panel Discussion on ‘The Role of National Statistical Offices in Supporting Data-Driven Energy Transitions’

On the sidelines of the Workshop on “Energy Statistics, Balances, and Accounts for Informed Energy and Climate Policies”, SESRIC, in collaboration with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA), the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), the International Energy Agency (IEA), and the Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT), organized a panel discussion titled “The Role of National Statistical Offices in Supporting Data-Driven Energy Transitions” on 10 December 2024 at SESRIC Headquarters in Ankara, Türkiye.

The session was moderated by Mr. Onur ÇAĞLAR, Director of Statistics and Information Department at SESRIC, and featured the following distinguished panelists:

  • Dr. Leonardo SOUZA, Chief of Section, Energy Statistics, Department of Economic and Social Affairs, United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD)
  • Dr. Wafa ABOUL HOSN, Chief of Economic Statistics, Statistics Division, UN ESCWA
  • Mr. Alexandre BIZEUL, Statistics Team Lead, International Energy Agency (IEA)
  • Mr. Mustafa YARDIMCI, Head of Energy Statistics Group, Turkish Statistical Institute (TURKSTAT)

The panel brought together representatives from National Statistical Offices (NSOs), relevant national institutions and international organizations to discuss best practices, challenges, and opportunities in supporting data-driven energy transitions. As countries move towards sustainable energy systems, the role of NSOs in providing reliable, timely, and comprehensive energy data becomes essential. The discussion examined how NSOs contribute to data-driven energy transitions and inform climate policy through integrated energy statistics and the development of comprehensive energy accounts.

Objectives of the Panel Discussion:

  • Highlighting the role of NSOs in enabling data-driven energy transitions.
  • Sharing best practices in compiling energy statistics and accounts, with a focus on national implementation.
  • Discussing challenges faced by NSOs and exploring collaborative solutions.
  • Identifying strategic actions to enhance the use of energy data in climate policy.
