SESRIC Participated in a Side Event to the Meeting of Ministers of Employment and Labour of the G20 Countries
Date: 09-10 July 2024
Venue: Virtual-Brazil -

In support of its ongoing efforts to promote care work, SESRIC participated in a Side Event to the Meeting of Ministers of Employment and Labour of the G20 Countries. The event on “Advancing Measurement of Care Work and the Care Economy”, which was hosted by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the International Labour Organization (ILO), gathered National Statistical Organisations (NSOs) from G20 member countries to address critical issues surrounding the measurement of care work and the care economy.

The primary objective of the meeting was to focus on current practices, identify data gaps, and highlight priority areas for improving statistical frameworks related to care work. Key topics of discussion included conceptual and theoretical considerations in care work measurement, data sources, indicator frameworks, policy implications, and national measurement frameworks.

Dr. Nenden Octavarulia SHANTY, Director of Training and Technical Cooperation Department of SESRIC, provided an overview of SESRIC’s capacity building initiatives focused on care work and care economy. Among SESRIC’s 24 capacity building programmes, five are particularly relevant to care work, including Poverty Alleviation Capacity Building Programme (PA-CaB), Public Employment Services Capacity Building Programme (PES-CaB), Occupational Safety and Health Capacity Building Programme (OSH-CaB), Social Development Capacity Building Programme (SD-CaB), and Social Security Institutions Capacity Building Programme (SSI-CaB).

Dr. SHANTY also highlighted SESRIC’s role as the Secretariat for the OIC Public Employment Services Network (OIC-PESNET) and the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET). These networks bring together representatives from public employment and national occupational safety and health institutions, as well as NSOs in OIC member countries to foster technical cooperation through the exchange of experiences and best practices. The programmes and networks organise various activities covering topics such as employment, women’s and youth empowerment, and care work initiatives.
