SESRIC participated in the 12th Session of the Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers

The 12th Session of the Islamic Conference of Tourism Ministers (ICTM) was held on 31 May - 2 June 2024 in Khiva, Republic of Uzbekistan, which was selected as the OIC City of Tourism for 2024 by the 11th Session of the ICTM. The 12th Session of the ICTM was hosted by the Ministry of Ecology, Environmental Protection and Climate Change of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Tourism Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan, and organized in collaboration with the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The Conference provided Member States with the opportunity to explore innovative strategies for promoting sustainable tourism practices, fostering intra-OIC tourism, and enhancing cooperation in tourism development efforts.

The 3-day conference commenced on the 31st May with the Senior Officials Meeting (SOM). The SOM reviewed the progress in the implementation of the OIC Framework for Development and Cooperation in the Domain of Tourism, the Strategic Roadmap for Development of Islamic Tourism, Member States’ tourism projects, and the organization of the OIC Tourism Fairs. During the SOM, SESRIC presented its 2024 edition of the report on “International Tourism in OIC Member Countries”, which examines recent trends and developments in international tourism, offering insights into the industry's resilience, economic impacts, and future prospects by specifically focusing on OIC countries. The Centre also presented its activities in the domain of tourism during the first day of the meeting. During the second day of the SOM, the Centre delivered a presentation on its activities towards the implementation of the Strategic Roadmap for Development of Islamic Tourism, and brief the participants on its capacity building activities in the area of tourism.

On the sidelines of the ICTM, SESRIC delegation also participated in the 9th Coordination Committee Meeting on Tourism on 31st May. The Committee reviewed the nominations received from the Member States for OIC City of Tourism and recommended two successful awardees each for 2025, 2026 and 2027. Being a member of the Committee, SESRIC provided its assessment of the nominations in order to guide the Selection Committee.

The 12th ICTM was concluded with the Ministerial Session on 2nd June, which adopted a set of resolutions, reflecting the decisions and outcomes reached at the Conference towards promoting the intra-OIC tourism cooperation. The Conference also announced the cities of Dakar (Senegal), Cairo (Egypt) and Lahore (Pakistan) as the ‘OIC City of Tourism’ for 2025, 2026 and 2027, respectively. The 13th Session of the ICTM will be hosted by the State of Qatar in 2026.
