Training Course on ‘Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)’
Date: 14-15 May 2024
Venue: Virtual-SESRIC, Ankara - Türkiye

Within the framework of its Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB), SESRIC, in collaboration with the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS) and the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) of Pakistan, will organise a Training Course on “Genetic Engineering and Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs)” on 14-15 May 2024. The course will be provided through an online video conferencing platform.

Competent experts from IOFS and NIBGE will provide this training course for the benefit of experts and executives from the Ministries of Agriculture and relevant national institutions in the OIC Countries.

The main objective of the training course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of genetic modification processes and their applications in agriculture. The activity aims to cover fundamental concepts of genetic engineering, such as gene cloning and transformation in crop plants, as well as the development and role of transgenic plants in improving crop yields and resilience to pests and diseases. Additionally, the training course will discuss international standards and regulatory frameworks for GMOs, as well as the use of genome editing in agriculture.

SESRIC initiated its Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB) in 2011 in order to contribute to the efforts of the OIC Member Countries in achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security. The Programme aims to enhance the capacities of the relevant national institutions in a wide range of areas such as efficient techniques of land, water and livestock management, fisheries and aquaculture and food security. It also serves as a platform for relevant experts from the OIC Member Countries to share and exchange best practices and experiences.
