Training Workshop on ‘SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) Indicators’

Within the framework of its Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC organised a Training Workshop on “SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) Indicators” on 26-27 March 2024 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training workshop was provided by competent experts from the National Institute of Statistics (INS) of the Republic of Cameroon and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), with contributions from the Economic and Statistical Observatory for Sub-Saharan Africa (AFRISTAT) for the benefit of 36 experts from the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and Ministries of Agriculture as well as Ministries of Economy and Planning of 10 French-speaking OIC countries.

The following topics were covered during the two days of the training workshop:

  • Overview of the 17 SDGs
  • Interconnection between SDG2 and the other SDGs
  • Calculation and interpretation of SDG 2.1.1 and 2.1.2 indicators:
    • 2.1.1 Prevalence of undernourishment
    • 2.1.2 Prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity in the population, based on the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES)
  • Monitoring food security in the context of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development:
    • 2.2.1 Prevalence of stunting (height for age <-2 standard deviation from the median of the World Health Organization (WHO) Child Growth Standards) among children under 5 years of age
    • 2.2.2 Prevalence of malnutrition (weight for height >+2 or <-2 standard deviation from the median of the WHO Child Growth Standards) among children under 5 years of age, by type (wasting and overweight)
  • Reflection on the calculation of selected SDG 2 indicators: Sources of data, calculation methods, validation of the indicator, interpretation techniques
    • 2.3.1 Volume of production per labour unit by classes of farming/pastoral/forestry enterprise size
    • 2.3.2 Average income of small-scale food producers, by sex and indigenous status
    • 2.4.1 Proportion of agricultural area under productive and sustainable agriculture
    • 2.5.1 Number of (a) plant and (b) animal genetic resources for food and agriculture secured in either medium- or long-term conservation facilities
    • 2.5.2 Proportion of local breeds classified as being at risk of extinction
  • Efforts of AFRISTAT in achieving SDG 2 and measuring relevant indicators
