Training Workshop on “Environmental Impact Assessment”

Within the framework of SESRIC’s Environment Capacity Building Programme (Environment-CaB), the Centre, in collaboration with the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA), organized a virtual training workshop on “Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)” on 30 November - 03 December 2020.

The training workshop was provided by a competent expert from Tunis International Centre for Environmental Technologies (CITET) for the benefit of experts from the Ministries of Environment of Djibouti, Egypt, Jordan, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

The training workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of EIA in addition to enhancing their capacities in conducting EIAs and carrying out necessary reviews. It also provided participants with advanced EIA procedures and most recent trends in identifying environmental impacts and ways and means to minimize them. The sessions of the training workshop also included case studies to support the theoretical aspects. The training workshop mainly focused on following topics:

  • Introduction, History, Definition and Content of the EIA
  • EIA in the Project Cycle
  • The Time Horizon of the EIA and Screening
  • Initiation of Scoping and Development of the Scoping
  • Exercise on the Evaluation of the Terms of Reference of the EIA, Definition, Importance and Evaluation of the EMP
  • Monitoring Protocol (identification of procedures, logistical and human resources, specific regulations, etc.)
  • Content of the EIA and Training of the Multidisciplinary Assessment or Review Team of the EIA
  • Summary of the Different Phases of the Process and Good Practices in the Field of EIAs
  • Others Environmental Studies SEA/ SIA

The training workshop was designed in line with the virtual training solutions undertaken by SESRIC in order to better serve the Centre’s training activities and keep participants motivated and engaged during this difficult time of the global crisis due to COVID-19 pandemic.
