SESRIC Engaged in Thematic Debate on AI and Human Rights at the 23rd Regular Session of the IPHRC

SESRIC participated in the 23rd Regular Session of the OIC Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission (IPHRC) held at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As part of this session, the OIC IPHRC organised a thematic debate on the “Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Human Rights: Challenges and Opportunities”. The main objectives of the debate were to foster awareness among OIC countries about the effects of AI on human rights by engaging with various subject-matter experts and stakeholders in this field, sharing views, and identifying challenges related to human rights in this context.

Dr. Nenden Octavarulia SHANTY, Director of the Training and Technical Cooperation Department at SESRIC, contributed as one of the panellists, presenting on “Digitization and Artificial Intelligence: Global Trends and Prospects for Development in OIC Member Countries”. In her presentation, Dr. Shanty discussed the latest technologies used for digital transformation, key indicators, the growth of automation, global access to digital infrastructures, and the AI market size. She specifically addressed the digital infrastructure in OIC countries, assessing their capacities in national development and AI utilisation, and policy.

During the 3-panels thematic debate, participants also heard detailed presentations from other representatives, academics, and stakeholders relevant to human rights and technological development, such as the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Family Watch International, International Islamic Fiqh Academy (IIFA), Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), League of Arab States, and the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. Representatives from Egypt, Kuwait, Malaysia, Saudi Arabia, and Uzbekistan also contributed to the panel sessions. The debate included an open discussion with Commission Members, Member and Observer Countries, and their National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs).

Additionally, Dr. Shanty attended the IPHRC High-Level Event on the “International Court of Justice Judgement on Gaza: Implications for Future and Possible Way Forward” on the second day of the session.
