The Workshop on “Conducting and Analysing Labour Force Surveys for Monitoring of the Labour Market for the Arab Countries” was held on 18-22 November 2012 in Amman, Jordan. The workshop was co-organised with the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS) in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) and Department of Statistics (DOS) Jordan.

The workshop attended by 17 participants representing 11 Arab states; namely Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Mauritania, Morocco, Sultanate of Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan, Tunisia and Yemen. Major aim of the workshop was to enhance the capabilities of the institutions, including National Statistical Offices and other line organisations in the area of using household surveys to produce reliable information on labour force characteristics for the use of policy makers. During the workshop the participants were informed about the following issues:

• Working time and underemployment

• Informal sector and informal employment
• Survey design
• Analysis of labour supply
• Analysis of labour slack and inadequate employment
