SESRIC and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) jointly organised the “SESRIC–UNCTAD Regional Seminar on FDI Statistics in OIC Member Countries” on the margins of the 9th World Investment Forum 2026 in Doha, Qatar.
The seminar brought together experts and policymakers to discuss recent developments in the compilation of foreign direct investment (FDI) statistics and innovative approaches to measuring FDI’s developmental impact. Participants exchanged experiences and insights on data gaps, methodological advancements and the integration of complementary datasets, including information on greenfield investments and project finance, to improve the coverage and analytical value of investment statistics.
The seminar also featured contributions from UNCTAD, the Islamic Centre for Development of Trade (ICDT), the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), the GCC Statistical Centre (GCC-Stat), and representatives of central banks and national statistical institutions from OIC Member Countries. Discussions focused on strengthening statistical systems, enhancing the quality and comparability of investment data, and addressing challenges in FDI measurement.
The seminar underscored the importance of international cooperation and methodological innovation in developing reliable and comprehensive FDI statistics. Strengthening the availability and quality of such data is essential for evidence-based policymaking, informed investment decisions and a better understanding of the contribution of foreign investment to sustainable economic development across OIC Member Countries.
