Within the framework of its Environment Capacity Building Programme (Environment-CaB), SESRIC organised a Study Visit on “Exploring Energy Generation from Landfill” on 21-22 July 2026 in Konya, Republic of Türkiye, in collaboration with the Konya Metropolitan Municipality.

The study visit brought together five professionals and engineers from the Ministry of Electricity of Iraq, the Ministry of Environment of Iraq, and the Solid Waste and Environment Department of the Mayoralty of Baghdad to enhance their knowledge and technical capacities in sustainable municipal solid waste management and landfill gas-to-energy practices.

Throughout the two-day programme, the participants attended a series of technical presentations delivered by experts from the Konya Metropolitan Municipality on the municipality’s experience in sustainable urban services, environmental management, integrated waste management, and energy generation from landfill. The programme also featured discussions on the municipality’s institutional approach, operational practices, and innovative solutions implemented in the field.

The study visit included on-site technical visits to the Aslım Excavation and Landfill Area and the Kaşınhanı Integrated Waste Disposal and Energy Production Facility, where the participants observed landfill management, site rehabilitation, waste treatment processes, and electricity generation from landfill gas. The visits provided valuable opportunities for direct exchanges with technical experts and enabled the participants to examine the facilities and operational processes in practice.

During the programme, the delegation also met with Mr. Ercan USLU, Secretary General of the Konya Metropolitan Municipality. He reaffirmed the Municipality’s readiness to share its knowledge and experience with OIC countries and underlined its openness to future cooperation initiatives that would contribute to strengthening technical collaboration and capacity development across the OIC region.

The study visit provided a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge, sharing practical experiences, and exploring innovative approaches to landfill gas recovery and renewable energy generation, while further strengthening technical cooperation between Türkiye and Iraq in the field of environmental sustainability.
