Statistical Training Course on ‘Demographic and Population Statistics’

Within the framework of its Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC co-organised a Statistical Training Course on “Demographic and Population Statistics (including migration trends)” in collaboration with and for the benefit of 17 experts of the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia on 20-22 January 2026 in Riyadh.

Dr.  Waleed Abelkhalik MUHAMMED, Senior Statistician at the Central Administration of Population and Social Studies, Department of Family and Migration Research of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) of the Arab Republic of Egypt, conducted the training course. The training course included discussion sessions and covered the following topics:

  • Methodologies and stages of statistical work and planning for field surveys
  • Statistical surveys and scientific research methods:
    • the concept of samples, validity and reliability
    • Practical application: presenting an example using SPSS software (the concept of validity)
    • Steps for designing forms
    • Samples of the international immigration form
  • An overview of the census implementation phases and its uses: experience of Egypt
  • The population pyramid: measuring the dependency burden and presenting some demographic indicators
  • International migration: incoming and outgoing migration, methods of calculating net migration
  • Questions on internal migration in the population census
  • Housing and quality of life:  housing quality characteristics (qualitative and quantitative) to link them to demographic needs (overcrowding, availability of services)
  • Migration in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
