Field Visit on ‘Reuse of Treated Wastewater in Agriculture’
Date: 17 September 2025
Venue: Afyonkarahisar - Türkiye

SESRIC organised a Field Visit on “Reuse of Treated Wastewater in Agriculture” on 17 September 2025 at the Afyonkarahisar Domestic Wastewater Irrigation Plant of the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) of Türkiye in Afyonkarahisar, Republic of Türkiye.

The programme was conducted within the framework of the SESRIC Project on “Promoting Unconventional Water Resources to Enhance Agriculture Productivity in Water-Scarce OIC Member Countries,” funded under the 12th Call for Project Proposals of the COMCEC Project Funding. It was organised in partnership with the Turkish Water Institute (SUEN) and in line with SESRIC’s Water Resources Management Capacity Building Programme (Water-CaB) and Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB).

The field visit brought together 23 representatives from the ministries and national institutions of water and agriculture from the beneficiary countries of the project, namely, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Republic of Chad, the Lebanese Republic, Kingdom of Morocco, Republic of Niger, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Republic of Senegal, and Republic of Türkiye. Representatives from the OIC and international institutions, including the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), INWRDAM, also participated.

During the visit, Türkiye shared its practical experiences and know-how with OIC countries on the safe and efficient reuse of treated domestic wastewater in agriculture. Participants had the opportunity to closely observe the Afyonkarahisar Domestic Wastewater Treatment Plant, which stands among the largest of its kind in Europe and the second largest worldwide. The plant applies advanced technologies and rigorous treatment processes that enable domestic wastewater to ensure safe reuse of domestic wastewater for irrigation, thereby supporting higher agricultural productivity.

This visit enabled participants to gain a clear understanding of the practical applications and benefits of treated domestic wastewater in agriculture, while highlighting Türkiye’s strong commitment to sustainable water management within the OIC community.
