Workshop on ‘Safeguarding Data in Crises’

SESRIC, in its capacity as the Secretariat of the OIC Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom) and in line with the relevant resolution of its 13th Session of OIC-StatCom, organised a Workshop on “Safeguarding Data in Crises” on 22-23 October 2025, in collaboration with the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

The workshop brought together 86 participants representing National Statistical Offices (NSOs) and other relevant institutions within the National Statistical Systems of 24 OIC countries. It was also organised as part of SESRIC’s activities to commemorate World Statistics Day 2025, which was celebrated globally on 20 October 2025 under the theme “Driving Change with Quality Statistics and Data for Everyone.”

The workshop featured the contributions of distinguished experts from AITRS, ESCWA, IsDB, the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) of Sudan, and the Central Statistical Organization (CSO) of Yemen.

Discussions during the two-day programme focused on strengthening data protection, business continuity, and ethical data management in crisis and post-crisis settings. The following topics were addressed:

  • Statistical Business Continuity in Conflict and Post-Conflict Settings
  • Ethics and Data Responsibility in Crisis Settings
  • Business Continuity and Organisational Resilience for NSOs
  • Technical Controls for Secure Data Management
  • The Experience of Palestine on Safeguarding Data in Crises
  • The Experience of Sudan on Safeguarding Data in Crises
  • The Experience of Yemen on the Flexibility of Statistical Systems and Data Protection in Crisis

The workshop underlined the importance of enhancing regional and international cooperation to strengthen the resilience of national statistical systems, ensuring the integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data even under crisis conditions.
