Study Visit on ‘Food Waste Management’
Date: 22-23 September 2025
Venue: SESRIC-Ankara - Türkiye

SESRIC, in collaboration with the Islamic Organization for Food Security (IOFS), the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, and the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of Türkiye, organised a Study Visit on “Food Waste Management” on 22-23 September 2025 in Ankara.

Within the framework of SESRIC’s Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB), the study visit aimed to address food loss and waste (FLW) issues by improving food security, mitigating environmental impacts and resource utilisation in OIC Countries in Central Asian region through a first-hand exchange of best practices and lessons-learnt.

The two-day study visit consisted of a meeting session in hybrid mode and field visits. A total of five participants from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan attended and benefitted from presentations delivered by experts from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of Türkiye (and its training arm, International Agricultural Training Centre (UTEM)) as well as the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change of Türkiye, along with field experts from the zero waste management facilities operated by the local municipalities of Altındağ and Sincan in Ankara.

Participants had an opportunity to visit two facilities, namely the Eco-Farming and Zero Waste Training Centre of Sincan Municipality and the Composting & Organic Household Waste Management Facility of Altındağ Municipality in Ankara. The visit provided participants with practical insights into the principle of zero waste through both integrated conventional and modern waste recycling treatment and methodologies in different settlement settings.

SESRIC launched the Agriculture and Food Security Capacity Building Programme (Agri-CaB) in 2011 with the aim of supporting and contributing to the efforts of the OIC member countries towards enhancing the institutional and human capacities of their national institutions and achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security.
