Webinar on ‘Improving Consumer Protection Regulation on Standards and Safety’

Within the framework of the Competition Authorities Capacity Building Programme (CA-CaB), SESRIC, in collaboration with the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC), has successfully held a Webinar on “Improving Consumer Protection Regulation on Standards and Safety” on 27 February 2025.

The webinar brought together 66 experts from consumer and competition authorities and ministries of trade of 24 OIC countries. The event aimed to enhance market transparency and competitiveness in member countries by helping the national competition authorities (NCAs) meet urgent challenges. Discussions also focused on improving consumer protection by raising awareness of consumer rights and improving product safety standards.

The webinar featured presentations by experts from the Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries, the Competition and Consumer Policies Branch of UN Trade & Development, the Competition Commission of Pakistan, the Directorate General for Consumer Protection and Market Surveillance of Türkiye, and the Competition Council of Tunisia.

The presentations covered the following key topics:

  • Consumer Protection’s Halal Standards and Regulations,
  • Consumer Product Safety and Standards in the UNGCP,
  • Pakistan’s Experience in Consumer and Competition Protection,
  • Türkiye’s Experience on Effective Consumer Protection Legislation: Misleading Ads and The Turkish Board Of Advertisements, and
  • Tunisia’s Experience in Consumer and Competition Protection.

SESRIC initiated the Capacity Building Programme for Competition Authorities in 2012 to enhance the skills of human resources within the Competition Authorities of OIC Member States. The programme aims to improve the efficient operation of domestic markets and foster a competitive environment, which is crucial for countries seeking to attract foreign direct investment.
