Date: 29-30 September 2024
Venue: Istanbul - Türkiye

In its capacity as the Secretariat, the Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye organised the 6th Meeting of the OIC-COMCEC Central Banks Forum, in Istanbul, Türkiye. The meeting gathered 57 governors and senior officials from the Central Banks of 21 OIC countries, along international institutions representatives to discuss the global economic outlook and explore ways to enhance cooperation among OIC countries within the framework of the Standing Committee for Economic and Commercial Cooperation of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (COMCEC) financial cooperation agenda.

H.E. Zehra Zümrüt SELÇUK addressed the Forum as a speaker and shared with the participants an overview of the economic and financial outlook of OIC countries. She noted that, following a robust recovery in 2021, the global economy experienced moderate growth rates of 3.5% in 2022, with a slight deceleration to 3.3% in 2023. H.E. SELÇUK emphasized that OIC countries experienced a milder contraction during the pandemic, leading to a stronger recovery during the first two years of the post-pandemic period. However, in 2023, economic growth in OIC countries moderated to a level close to the world average but lower than its long-term average of 4.3%. In line with global trends, the unemployment rate in OIC countries also followed a declining trend to reach 5.7% in 2023.

During her address, H.E. SELÇUK also highlighted key risks such as geopolitical instability, inflation, and fiscal tightening, which continue to shape the global economic landscape. She further noted in the face of these global challenges, many OIC countries continue to struggle to diversify their economies, improving export competitiveness and reducing inflation rates.

The 6th Meeting of the OIC-COMCEC Central Banks Forum concluded with the adoption of an official Communique.
