Within the framework of SESRIC’s Disaster Risk Management Capacity Building Programme (DRM-CaB), the Centre, in collaboration with the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) of the Republic of Türkiye, organised a Training Course on “Strengthening Information Management Systems for Effective Disaster-Risk Reduction (DRR) in OIC Countries” on  20-21 December 2023 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was provided by a competent expert from AFAD of the Republic of Türkiye for the benefit of 105 experts and executives from the relevant Ministries and national institutions in charge of disaster risk management in 23 OIC Member Countries. The OIC Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) also contributed to the training course by facilitating a technical session titled “Disaster Risk Modelling and its Applications- The Case of Pakistan.”

The main objective of the training course was to enhance the technical human resources capacities of participants in disaster risk reduction (DRR), specifically in the role of information management systems in early warning systems and disaster response planning. The course also promoted the use of information and communication technologies for DRR. It contributed to sharing knowledge, experience, and best practices among relevant national institutions of the OIC Member Countries to identify different types of disaster risk information and mitigate disaster risk. Over the two days of the training, the following topics were covered:

• Understanding of Risk, Data and Models
• Strengthening Information Management Systems
• Effective Disaster-Risk Reduction Plans
• 06 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes
• Build Back Better After Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes
• Disaster Economic Loss and Calculation Methodologies

The Disaster Risk Management Capacity Building Programme (DRM-CaB) was developed and initiated by SESRIC in 2015 following the request of the 38th Session of the Islamic Commission for Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs (ICECS), which was held in April 2015 in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The Programme aims to strengthen institutional and human capacities by sharing knowledge, experiences and best practices among the Disaster Risk Management Authorities in the OIC Member Countries. Within this framework, the Centre organises capacity-building activities for the benefit of the staff of these Authorities in the OIC Member Countries by using various modalities such as training courses, training workshops, and study visits.
