SESRIC participated in the closing ceremony of the Reverse Linkage Project between Pakistan and Türkiye on ‘Earthquake Seismological Research’
Date: 03 October 2023
Venue: Islamabad - Pakistan

SESRIC participated in the closing ceremony of the Reverse Linkage Project between Pakistan and Türkiye on “Earthquake Seismological Research” that was held on 3 October 2023 at the headquarters of Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) in Islamabad, Pakistan.

The ceremony at the conclusion of the final phase of the Reverse Linkage Project brought together representatives of the partner institutions, namely, SESRIC, Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), TÜBİTAK Marmara Research Center (MRC) of Türkiye, and Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

Representatives of partner institutions delivered remarks highlighting the fruitful collaboration that resulted in achieving the envisioned objectives of the project to enhance Pakistan’s capacity to detect, monitor earthquakes, and assess their risks.

The ceremony concluded with the distribution of certificates to PMD staff who successfully completed all phases of the capacity building trainings organized within the framework of the project, namely, Training Course on “Global Positioning System (GPS): Data Collection and Processing”, Training Course on “Seismology: Earthquake Data Processing and Analysis”, and Training Course on “Site Classification: Data Collection and Processing”.

The project aimed at making significant improvements in PMD’s capacity in terms of infrastructure, systems and human resources. It helped strengthening PMD’s seismological research knowledge to produce timely information on earthquakes, undertake accurate assessment of earthquake risks and better inform other institutions about those risks.

Reverse Linkage is a technical cooperation mechanism introduced by IsDB in 2013 to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and expertise, as well as the sharing of best practices among partnering OIC member countries. In an effort to develop the capacities of the member countries and devise solutions for their autonomous development, Reverse Linkage is considered a valuable peer-to-peer south-south cooperation modality. Within the framework of this modality, SESRIC contributes to the implementation of the relevant Reverse Linkage projects with a view to addressing the capacity building needs at the human and institutional levels.
