Training Course on ‘Preventing Workplace Hazards’

Within the framework of the OIC Occupational Safety and Health Network (OIC-OSHNET), SESRIC provided facilitation and necessary technical support for the Training Course on “Preventing Workplace Hazards”, which was organised by the Directorate of Occupational Safety and Health at the Ministry of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, on 06-07 December 2022 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was provided by a competent expert from the Ministry of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for the benefit of specialists and executives from the relevant Ministries and national institutions in charge of occupational safety and health in Arabic-speaking Member States of the OIC.

The training course aimed to provide an overview of occupational hazards in the working environment, including but not limited to physical, electrical, mechanical, and ergonomic, as well as biological and chemical hazards. It also discussed the designed processes of occupational risk assessment to prevent workplace hazards and the particularity of dealing with risks in the workplace for some special groups.

The training course commenced with the opening remarks of Eng. Najah ABU TAFISH, Director of Labour Inspection and Occupational Safety and Health Development at the Ministry of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. She began her speech by thanking SESRIC and the Ministry of Labour and Social Security of the Republic of Türkiye, represented by the Directorate General of Occupational Safety and Health (DGOSH), for the efforts made to provide facilitation and necessary technical support as well as to extend invitations to the member countries to participate in this training course. She also briefed the participants about the activities of the Ministry in the field of OSH and the specialized guidelines prepared by the Ministry to manage and assess risks in the most dangerous sectors. Before concluding her remarks, she underlined the readiness and willingness of her Ministry to continue contributing to the success of the objectives of the OIC-OSHNET and SESRIC’s capacity building training activities in the field of OSH.

In his remarks, Mr. Onur ÇAĞLAR, Director of the Training and Technical Cooperation Department at SESRIC, highlighted the efficient arrangements required to prevent hazards in workplaces and the essential elements to predict and face any unforeseen accidents. He also indicated that national institutions working in this domain are in demand to share and enhance their capacities and knowledge towards better practices and safer workplaces. He thanked the Ministry of Labour of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan for its active engagement in the work of the Network and also invited other national OSH institutions to actively involve in the Network activities, either provider or beneficiary, to ensure a higher level of benefit, engagement and interaction among the national OSH Institutions in the OIC member countries.

The OIC-OSHNET was launched in 2011 in order to establish closer cooperation among the Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Institutions of the OIC member countries through sharing knowledge, experience and best practices. SESRIC assumes the role of the OIC Technical Coordinator of the OIC-OSHNET and carries out a specific capacity building programme on OSH namely, Occupational Safety and Health Capacity Building Programme (OSH-CaB) to support the efforts of the OIC member countries in improving workplace safety and health.
