Within the framework of SESRIC’s Environment Capacity Building Programme (Environment-CaB) and in line with the relevant resolutions of the 47th Session of the Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), SESRIC, in collaboration with the Regional Organization for the Conservation of the Environment of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (PERSGA) and the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation (ATCT), organised the Training Course on “Fostering Renewable Energy Solutions in the OIC Member Countries” on 23-26 May 2022 through an online video conferencing platform.

The training course was provided by a competent expert from the Tunis International Center for Environmental Technologies (CITET) for the benefit 62 experts and executives from the Ministries of Environment, Ministries of Energy and other relevant national institutions of 21 OIC Member Countries.

The main objective of the training course was to strengthen the technical capacities of participants in renewable energy solutions and their environmental impacts and emerging technologies and trends in the field, as well as policies to support sustainable energy solutions in order to contribute to the implementation of relevant regional and international frameworks on climate change.

The training course commenced with the opening statement of Mr. Onur ÇAĞLAR, Director of Training and Technical Cooperation Department at SESRIC, who underscored the compelling need of OIC countries to design structural reform policies aimed at diversifying the energy mix with renewables and channelling investments to the renewable energy transition. Mr. ÇAĞLAR also briefed the participants on the contribution of SESRIC to the efforts of the OIC and its member countries in the field related to its mandated areas, namely statistics, research, and training.

In her welcoming remarks, Ms. Lamia ESSEGHAIER, Director of South-South Cooperation Programmes and Projects at the Tunisian Agency for Technical Cooperation (ATCT), began by thanking SESRIC for jointly organising this important training course. She stressed on the global transition to renewable energy and the efforts required for OIC Member Countries to initiate a step forward in this transition.

Ms. Rym Ben Ammar GUIZANI, Head of International Cooperation at the Tunis International Center for Environmental Technologies (CITET), also thanked SESRIC in her remarks and emphasized the importance of this collaboration to foster sharing of knowledge, experience and best practices in the OIC region. Ms. GUIZANI stressed the significance of improving the efficiency of energy production and use as well as increasing efforts towards supporting clean energy generation in the OIC Member Countries.

The Environment Capacity Building Programme (Environment-CaB) was developed and initiated by SESRIC in 2014 in order to promote sustainable production and consumption patterns and to contribute to the protection of environment in the OIC Member Countries. Within this framework, the Centre organises capacity-building activities for the benefit of the OIC Member Countries by using various modalities such as training courses, training workshops, and study visits.
