Workshop on ‘Coordination within the National Statistical Systems’

SESRIC, in its capacity as the Secretariat of OIC Statistical Commission (OIC-StatCom), organised a Workshop on ‘Coordination within the National Statistical Systems (NSSs)’ in collaboration with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) – with additional contributions of Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21), United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA), and United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) – on 15-17 June 2021 through a video conferencing platform with the participation of 84 attendees for the NSOs of 31 OIC countries and 5 international organisations.

Organised within the framework of the Programme of Action 2021-2025 of the OIC-StatCom Strategic Vision for 2030, the Workshop aimed at facilitating the sharing of good practices among the OIC countries and learning from the potential challenges needed be taken into consideration for efficient and effective coordination within the NSSs of OIC countries.

In his welcoming remarks, H.E. Mr. Nyakassi M. B. SANYANG, Statistician General of the Gambia Bureau of Statistics and the Chairman of the 9th Session of OIC-StatCom, underlined that the level of effectiveness of NSSs varies among the OIC member countries. In this regard, by learning from other’s experiences, it will help the other NSOs of OIC countries to get to the intended levels. Besides, he encouraged all participants to actively participate in the Workshop and gain the knowledge in order to implement it in their respective offices.

In his opening speech at the Opening Session, Dr. Atilla KARAMAN, Director of Statistics and Information Department of SESRIC, emphasised that NSSs face dual effects of increased data demand and limited survey implementation during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this regard, a well-coordinated NSS is a pre-requisite to meet the emerging data needs to inform COVID-19 response and recovery policies.

Following Dr. Karaman, Mr. Gabriel GAMEZ, Inter-Regional Adviser at the UNSD, praised in his opening remarks the strategic response of SESRIC to consolidate the institutional and organizational frameworks supporting efficient and effective governance and coordination mechanisms of NSSs.

The Workshop on ‘Coordination within the National Statistical Systems (NSSs)’ covered the following topics:

  • Official Statistics and NSS: Main Concepts and Principles
  • Leadership and Coordination within the NSS
  • Coordination within the NSSs: Why and How?
  • Data Stewardship: Data Governance beyond the NSSs
  • Country Experiences on Coordination within the NSSs and Data Stewardship

The Workshop was conducted through a video conferencing platform by following synchronous learning and instruction approaches designed in line with the virtual training solutions undertaken by SESRIC in order to better serve the Centre’s training activities and keep participants motivated and engaged during this time of global crisis due to COVID-19.
