Training Course on ‘Business Statistics’ in Uganda

In accordance with its 2017 Annual Work Plan and within the framework of Statistical Capacity Building (StatCaB) Programme, SESRIC organised the Training Course on ‘Business Statistics’ at the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) on 15-17 August 2017.

The Training Course was conducted by Mr. Samba BARROW, Principal Statistician at the Gambia Bureau of Statistics (GBOS), with the participation of 20 officials of the UBOS.

As defined in the Classification of Statistical Activities (CSA Rev. 1 - October 2009; http://goo.gl/olg3Tz); Business statistics - economy wide statistics on the activities of enterprises, covers work on economic statistics across different sectors (as opposed to 2.4 that deals with specific individual sectors), deals with topics like statistics on economic activities of enterprises, business demography, business investment, business services, demand for services, industrial performance, enterprises by size class, industrial production, commodities, structure of sales and services, outputs of the service industries, non-profit institutions.

The Training Course on ‘Business Statistics’ included discussion activities with a focus on the following topics:

  • Introduction to Business Statistics
  • Definitions and Concepts
  • Scope and Coverage of Data Collection
  • Classifying and Categorizing Businesses by Activity and Size
  • Compilation of Industrial Production
  • Industrial Performance
  • Business Demography
