Did You Know?

In order to reflect striking facts about OIC Member Countries in a simple and user friendly way, SESRIC has just launched a new module called "Did You Know?"
Each snapshot, which has been enriched with data from a variety of international resources, can be accessed by clicking on the slides. The SESRIC DYK aims to highlight the current situation of OIC Member Countries on a specific socio-economic variable in a one-page format. The content of this collection will be regularly updated and enriched with different indicators.

The OIC Member Countries hosted 63% of the world's total 35 million refugees in 2022, bearing the greatest responsibility for hosting the world's displaced population.

In 2022, the OIC countries produced 97% of the world's dates, underscoring the importance of this sector to the member states.

At the OIC level, there has been a remarkable 36% reduction in neonatal mortality since 2000.

OIC countries, as a whole, published 376 thousand scientific publications in 2022 compared to 20 thousand publications in 2000. There has been about a twenty-fold increase in this period.

As of 2023, there are 226 World Heritage Sites inscribed in the List by 48 OIC countries, equal to 19.5% of all World Heritage Sites in 2023.
PROGRESS IN LIFE EXPECTANCY AT BIRTH, 2011-2021

OIC countries recorded a 0.8-year progress in average life expectancy at birth rate higher than that of world with 0.5-year between 2011 and 2021.

The life expectancy at birth rates of 21 OIC countries stood above the world average of 71 years and 10 of them were with over 75 years of life expectancy in 2021.
5G NETWORK DEPLOYMENTS (2022)

Out of more than 120 thousand deployments of the 5G network worldwide as of end of October 2022, only 686 deployments are found in 30 OIC countries.
AVERAGE COST OF SENDING REMITTANCES AS A PROPORTION OF TOTAL AMOUNT REMITTED

Average cost of OIC countries in sending remittances as a proportion of total amount remitted has declined from 6.1% in 2018 to 4.9% in 2021.

Based on the data between 2004 and 2018, 31 OIC countries have youth literacy rates above 90% and 13 OIC countries have youth labour force participation rates above 50%.

In 2017, life expectancy at birth on average across OIC countries was estimated as 68 years, a 5.4-year increase compared to that in 2000.

The OIC countries group claimed a share of 5.3% in the world total renewable electricity generation in 2017.

Total fertility rate of the OIC countries group fell on average from 3.9 children per woman of childbearing age in 2000 to 3.3 in 2017.

In the period 2000-2018, the OIC population grew from 1.3 billion to 1.8 billion at an average annual rate of 2%.

The OIC countries group recorded a 30.5% gross domestic savings rate in 2018, a 0.1 percentage-point decrease compared to that in 2000.

Out of 54 OIC countries with available data, the time required to get electricity decreased in 30 OIC countries. No change was observed in 23 OIC countries between 2015 and 2019.

In the period 2000-2018, the OIC countries showed a tendency to converge at a speed of about 0.89% per annum.

Compared to April 2019, OIC Mobility Score % for 56 OIC countries increased and no change was observed for 1 OIC country.

In the period 2000-2018, the average annual exponential growth rate of GDP per person employed (constant 2011 PPP $) of the OIC countries as a group was estimated as 2%.
URBAN POPULATION RATIO (2000 vs. 2017)

9 OIC countries (mostly Arab countries in the Gulf region) including Kuwait, Qatar, Jordan, Bahrain, Gabon, Lebanon, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman had urban population ratios over 80% in 2017.

The OIC countries group recorded a 4.5% current health expenditure as a percentage of GDP in 2016 on average which was equal to an increase of 0.8 percentage point in the period from 2000 to 2016.

Employment demographics in the agriculture sector plays a role in the negative relationship between female youth labour force participation and literacy rates in some OIC countries.

The ratio of tobacco net imports to production in the OIC countries group is estimated as 1.5 in 2016, a 0.8-point increase compared to that in 2000.

The OIC countries group had a share of around 12.3% of internal renewable water resources and 16.9% of external renewable water resources of the World in the period 2013-2017.

Prevalence of smoking among adult male population in the OIC countries group was estimated as 42.1% in 2016, a 1.3-percentage point decrease compared to that in 2000.
