Training Course on 'Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection' in Azerbaijan

The Centre organised a training on “Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection” at the Cotton Research Institute of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 22-24 June 2011. The Course was provided by Mr. Ramazan ┼×adet Güvercin, an expert from the Kahramanmara┼č Agricultural Research Institute of Turkey, and was attended by 15 staff members of the Cotton Research Institute of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The training course on “Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection” mainly covered the following subjects:

  • Cotton cultivation in Turkey, cotton breeding in Public and Private sectors. Listening cotton cultivation information in Azerbaijan
  • Cotton breeding and sources of variation in cotton
  • Overview of methods applied in selection variations
  • Introduction and explanation of the pedigree selection method
  • Selection pressure and decision for selecting plant count from population
  • Advantages and disadvantages of pedigree selection
  • Registry of the genealogy of pedigree
  • Points that are important for the selection of the combinations
  • Comparison of other methods with pedigree selection method
