Training Course on 'Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection' in Azerbaijan

The Centre organised a training on “Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection” at the Cotton Research Institute of the Republic of Azerbaijan on 22-24 June 2011. The Course was provided by Mr. Ramazan Şadet Güvercin, an expert from the Kahramanmaraş Agricultural Research Institute of Turkey, and was attended by 15 staff members of the Cotton Research Institute of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

The training course on “Breeding and Biotechnology: Pedigree Selection” mainly covered the following subjects:

  • Overview of the importance of cotton in the world
  • Cotton cultivation in Turkey, cotton breeding in Public and Private sectors. Listening cotton cultivation information in Azerbaijan
  • Cotton breeding and sources of variation in cotton
  • Overview of methods applied in selection variations
  • Introduction and explanation of the pedigree selection method
  • Selection pressure and decision for selecting plant count from population
  • Advantages and disadvantages of pedigree selection
  • Registry of the genealogy of pedigree
  • Points that are important for the selection of the combinations
  • Comparison of other methods with pedigree selection method
